Tennis Club Open Day 2010

Saturday 10th July - 2pm to 5pm

We're holding an Open Day at the Tennis Club to find lots of new members who have been inspired by Wimbledon to pick up a tennis racquet again - or for the first time.

It's going to be a fun, social afternoon with:

  • Tea & cakes
  • Mini tournaments
  • Competitions
  • The ball 'lobster' (the machine that fires out balls)
  • Lots of tennis

We'd love as many existing members as possible to come along and bring anyone you know who might be interested in finding out more about the tennis club - friends, family, colleagues, neighbours - all ages and standards, complete beginners are welcome.

Or just come along for an afternoon of tennis, cakes and (if we can arrange it) sunshine!

Club Championships 2010

Hungerford Tennis Club held the Club Championships through September and October, with the finals on October 12th.

The winners were:
Men's Singles - Peter Sinyard
Men's Doubles - Tom Russell and Richard Venner
Ladies' Doubles - Marbeth Blair and Jenny Lakin
Mixed Doubles - Mel Pennington and Tom Russell

Hungerford Tennis Club reinstated the Club Championships this year after a seven year gap, holding events for Men's Singles, Men's Doubles, Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

Players arranged their own matches throughout the knock-out tournament and there were a number of excellent and hard fought games. One of the younger entrants, Tom Russell, powered his way through the men's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles to take part in all three finals on Finals' Day.

Finals' Day was held on Sunday 12th October and, despite the Mixed Doubles final being played in the thick morning fog, the sun shone for the remaining matches. The Ladies' Doubles and Men's Singles finals were also played in the morning before all the players and spectators moved across to the Hungerford Club for a bangers 'n' mash lunch. Charlotte Chidley provided an excellent lunch for everyone, cooking up sausages from the local Hungerford butcher.

After lunch everyone returned to the courts to watch the final match - the Men's Doubles. Jonathan Currell, Club Chairman, then presented the winners with their trophies.

Tom and his partner Mel Pennington were successful in the Mixed Doubles against Marbeth Blair and Peter Sinyard and Tom also won the Men's Doubles with Richard Venner against Simon Clements and Andrew Roberts. Peter Sinyard was victorious in the Men's Singles, retaining his title from 2001. The Ladies' Doubles was won by Marbeth Blair and Jenny Lakin against Brona Brown and Mel Pennington.

There was no Ladies' Singles Championship this year, but Hans Holst has very kindly donated a Ladies' Singles Trophy in memory of his late wife Alyce which will be presented to the winner of the Ladies' Singles from next year.

Everyone agreed that the Championships had been a great success and will definitely have to become an annual event.
