Hungerford Tennis Club News

Newsletter February 2008

Hungerford Tennis ClubFor the Tennis section the spring and summer cannot come soon enough. Subscription renewal forms have been dispatched and we have already received a very good response. The desire to be in the draw for Wimbledon tickets for those that have renewed or joined, by the end of March is a strong motivator! The treasurer is, however, always pleased to see subscriptions paid early.

Membership for 2007 finished at a total of 179 of which 71 were juniors. Many of our local neighbouring tennis clubs would just love to have, progress and encourage this many juniors - it is a very positive indicator of the overall health of the Tennis Club.

Coaching, mainly juniors, goes from strength to strength under our excellent CCA qualified coach Lauren Bryett. She began with just Thursday coaching and has now added Friday and Saturday as well. Lauren is very happy to coach all ages and sessions can be arranged with her via telephone (07859 825 440) or email .

During the winter the U12's and U18's have played in the Berkshire winter league and plan to play in the National Junior club leagues through the summer. In addition the ‘Road to Wimbledon’ U14 tournament will probably be in April/May 2008. Further details can be obtained from our junior coordinator Alison Russell on 0774 712 8687 or via email .

Weather permitting, club play on Wednesday and Friday evenings and Sundays has continued through the winter as have the monthly American tournaments on Sunday mornings. These have been followed by an excellent lunch over at the Club and have proved very popular with members. Thanks must go to those dedicated organisers for all their hard work.

We ran five teams in the Newbury and District leagues in 2007. Congratulations to ‘Men's A’ and ‘Mixed A’ who both gained promotion and all other teams who remained in their current leagues. Five teams will also be entered in 2008 and members keen to play in the teams should make themselves known to one of the team captains at a club play session early in the season.

A very successful and enjoyable annual dinner was held again at the Cross Keys at Great Bedwyn with over 40 members and partners attending. Favourable train times made the event even more enjoyable for those that like the odd pint! Again, thanks must go to the organisers.

Preliminary discussions are in hand with West Berkshire Council and our neighbours about extending our current floodlight availability. We are also investigating the best way to keep moss at bay on the courts during the winter and, ideally, to eradicate it permanently.

Finally we are planning a working party at the beginning of the season to give the courts and pavilions a thorough spring clean. It is hoped that a good number will turn up to make the job a lot easier. Please watch the club notice board for the date.
